Its Unique History
As often happens here, the name of the building comes from the name of the noble family that owned it and used it as their residence, House Michiel. Differently than some of the most famous ones in town, it lost its epithet Ca' which usually identifies all the noble adobes in Venice, being Ca' the vernacular word for Casa, home.
The epithet that still remains, dal Brusà (literally burnt) comes instead from the devastating fire of 1774 that destroyed it almost entirely. House Michiel was one of the most illustrious in Venice, especially during the XII century when they gave to the city three Dogi in just 70 years: Vitale I, Domenico e Vitale II. Thanks those ancient merits, the Serenissima Repubblica di Venezia stepped up and fund the reconstruction of the entire building. The Palace was completed in just 3 years, in 1777, keeping the structure unaltered as a way to show respect for the family and the Venetian architectural style.
Few surviving elements were reused, such as the astonishing XV century well curb at the ground floor and the splendid Istrian stone mullioned windows that characterize the second and third floor.
In everlasting memory of the tragic event, the facade still bears the Latin inscription
QUOS IGNIS CONSUMPSIT PATRIA MEMENTA MAJORUM NEPOTIBUS PATRIOS LARES RESTITUIT S.E. VIDUS IANUARIJ 1777
which we can roughly translate into: the mindful homeland gives back to the descendants the dwelling that the fire consumed.
